The Jan Companies was founded by Nicholas Janikies in 1969, when he opened the very first Burger King restaurant in Rhode Island. What began as a single entrepreneurial venture quickly grew into one of the most successful family-owned businesses in the region. Guided by Nick’s vision, perseverance, and commitment to excellence, the company expanded into nearly 100 Burger King locations across the East Coast.
Nick also believed strongly in long-term ownership. Whenever possible, he sought to own the land beneath his restaurants. That foresight laid the foundation for the company’s thriving real estate division, which today spans multiple asset classes and continues to grow.
Over the decades, The Jan Companies has diversified into new industries, from beloved local dining brands like Newport Creamery, to bringing global favorites like Krispy Kreme to the area, to private country clubs that provide exceptional hospitality and recreation.
Our Leadership
Today, The Jan Companies is led by the second generation of the Janikies family, who continue to build upon Nick’s entrepreneurial spirit:
Bill Janikies | President
Oversees Burger King operations and the company’s country club portfolio. Bill’s leadership emphasizes operational excellence and exceptional guest experiences.
Jon Janikies | Vice President
Focuses on Newport Creamery and Krispy Kreme operations, while also spearheading the company’s expansion into private lending. Jon brings a modern, growth-oriented perspective to the family business.
Janice Mathews | Vice President
Leads real estate management, development, and country club operations for The Jan Companies, focusing on property performance, capital projects, and exceptional member experiences.
Cyndi Janikies | Treasurer
Responsible for financial stewardship and ensuring stability across the company’s diverse holdings.
